Updated: October 2026

Istria has a mild Mediterranean climate, which makes it worth a visit almost all year round. Even so, a holiday in June feels completely different from one in August or October. The best time to travel depends on what you have in mind: swimming and water sports, hiking and cycling, city sightseeing or a gourmet trip with wine, olive oil and truffles. Here is an overview of the weather, sea temperatures and seasons around Pula, Medulin and Pomer.

In short: when to go to Istria?

  • Beach holiday: June to September, with July and August the warmest months
  • Swimming without the crowds: June and September
  • Hiking and cycling: April, May, late September and October
  • Gourmet trip: September to November, with the wine and olive harvests and truffle season
  • Peace and quiet and lower prices: spring and late autumn

Istria through the year

Spring (April to May)

Spring is blossom time. At Cape Kamenjak orchids are in flower – the peninsula is known for around 30 species of orchid. The weather is ideal for hiking and cycling, and the trails are empty. The sea is still too cool for most people, although the brave take the plunge on warm days. Many restaurants, beach bars and tour operators start their season in April or May.

June: the start of summer, with plenty of space

Many connoisseurs consider June one of the best months. The water reaches around 22 °C, the days are long and the main German summer holidays have usually not yet begun. According to visitpula.hr, the higher peak-season rate for cars applies at Cape Kamenjak from mid-June. Arrive early in the morning and you will have the most beautiful coves almost to yourself.

July and August: high summer

Now the sea is at its warmest and the beaches at their busiest. According to pulainfo.hr, the Arena in Pula is open daily from 8 am to 10 pm from June to August (as of 2026, please check locally) and hosts concerts, the Pula Film Festival and the gladiator shows “Spectacvla Antiqva”. According to kroati.de, Fažana celebrates its sardine festival in August. Boat trips and dolphin tours from Medulin set off almost daily at this time.

Tips for high summer:

  • Go to the beach early in the morning or from late afternoon
  • Visit towns such as Pula and Rovinj in the morning or evening
  • Head for car parks at popular spots early
  • Book excursions and tours in advance
  • Pack plenty of water and sun protection

September: the insider tip

For many, September is the most beautiful month in Istria. The sea is still around 23 °C, the beaches empty out and the heat eases off. According to ADAC Reisen, the wine and olive harvests begin in September and October – the region comes alive with culinary delights. From mid-September, the cheaper shoulder-season rate for cars applies again at Cape Kamenjak.

October: food and hiking

October is quieter. At around 19.8 °C, the sea is still fine for a quick swim for many. The month is ideal for hikes, bike rides and trips into the hinterland. Truffle season is under way – the main season for white truffles is autumn, roughly from September to January. A trip to Motovun for truffle hunting fits perfectly now. According to pulainfo.hr, Pula Arena is open from 9 am to 7 pm in October.

November to March: low season

In winter Istria is quiet. Many restaurants and places to stay on the coast are closed or have reduced hours. November is the rainiest month. If you are looking for peace and quiet, you will still find lovely days: walks along the coast, museums in Pula and the Pula Aquarium, which according to its website is open all year round (except 25 December and 1 January). According to guidebooks, driving into Cape Kamenjak is free outside the season.

What to do in bad weather?

Even in summer a stormy day can crop up. That is when the aquarium in Fort Verudela, the underground tunnels of Zerostrasse or a visit to winemakers and olive oil producers are worthwhile. You will find more ideas in our guide to a rainy day in Pula and Istria.
