Cycling and hiking on the Medulin Riviera: cycle routes 315 to 319, Cape Kamenjak on foot, the Orchid Route and tips on starting points and seasons.

Updated: October 2026

The southern tip of Istria is flat enough for relaxed family outings and varied enough for sporty tours. Between Medulin, Pomer, Premantura and Banjole, signposted cycle routes link the villages, and with Cape Kamenjak nature park, one of the most beautiful hiking and cycling areas in Croatia is right around the corner. In this guide we present the most important routes and give practical tips for your tours.

The Medulin Riviera cycle network

The Medulin Riviera tourist board has signposted a whole network of numbered cycle routes. On medulinriviera.info the following routes are listed, among others:

  • 315 – Medulin Riviera cycle route
  • 316 – Premanturka cycle route
  • 317 – Medulinka cycle route
  • 318 – Orhideja cycle route
  • 319 – Banjolka cycle route
  • plus further routes such as 357 – Kamenjak Direct, 358 – Biodiversity cycle route and several routes towards Pula and the Brijuni Riviera

You can download the maps as GPX files for your sat nav or smartphone. Printed maps are available at the local information offices.

315 – Medulin Riviera: the big loop

Route 315 is the longest in the area and connects the villages of the riviera. According to istria-bike.com, it runs, among other things, along the east side of Kamenjak to Premantura, a village that has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. You do not have to ride the whole loop – just pick a section that suits your fitness.

316 – Premanturka: a short loop with sea views

The Premanturka is ideal for half a day. The key facts according to medulinriviera.info:

  • Start and finish: entrance to Premantura, Paredine car park
  • Length: 10 km
  • Surface: 5 km asphalt, 5 km gravel
  • Elevation gain: 145 m

According to istria-bike.com, the route runs along a beach at the end of which a bridge leads across to Pomer – the Šetnica na moru.

318 – Orhideja: the Orchid Route

According to kroati.de, the Orchid Route starts in Medulin and runs across the Vižula peninsula, past the remains of a Roman villa, to Pomer. It is especially beautiful in spring, when orchids bloom along the wayside. Cape Kamenjak is known for around 30 species of orchid.

317 Medulinka and 319 Banjolka

The Medulinka explores the hinterland of Medulin, the Banjolka the area around Banjole with its rugged coastline. Both are great for getting to know the area away from the beaches. Details on length and elevation profile can be found on medulinriviera.info.

Cape Kamenjak by bike or on foot

Why go without a car?

Cape Kamenjak nature park is free for pedestrians and cyclists. Cars pay a daily fee in season, and the gravel tracks are dusty and full of potholes. By bike you can move more easily from cove to cove and stop briefly wherever you like. According to fernwehblog.net, you can park free of charge in front of the barrier beyond Premantura and then explore the park on foot or by bike.

The loop around the peninsula

One visitor on the Adriaforum reports around 14 kilometres for a complete loop of Kamenjak along the signposted hiking and biking trail. Along the way there are numerous swimming coves, a dinosaur nature trail and viewpoints overlooking the Porer lighthouse. With swimming breaks, allow half a day to a full day.

Important rules in the nature park

  • Only ride on marked tracks – according to the park rules, this also applies to motorbikes.
  • Fires outside the designated fire pits are prohibited.
  • Dogs must be kept on a lead.
  • According to visitpula.hr, visitors are asked to leave the park by 10 pm.

Hiking around Pomer

The Šetnica na moru

One of the loveliest short walks starts right in Pomer: according to lust-auf-kroatien.de, the Šetnica na moru footbridge crosses Ribnjak bay for about 300 metres to the Premantura side. The narrow concrete walkway has only a rope railing and passing places are rare – so be considerate when people come the other way. On the other side you continue to the Premantura hiking trails and towards Cape Kamenjak.

Gornji Kamenjak and hiking trail 303

Above Premantura lies Gornji Kamenjak, where, according to lust-auf-kroatien.de, hiking trail 303 is the main draw – with swimming coves nearby. Ideal if you want to combine hiking and swimming.

More routes

On platforms such as komoot, outdooractive or alpenvereinaktiv you will find detailed routes, for example a loop from Premantura via Cape Kamenjak to Portić bay. Download the route for offline use beforehand, as reception is not good everywhere on the peninsula.

Practical tips

Best season and time of day

Spring and autumn are ideal for cycling and hiking – temperatures are pleasant and the trails emptier. In high summer you should set off early in the morning and spend the midday heat at the beach. There is little shade at the cape. You can read more about the climate in our guide to the best time to visit Istria.

Equipment

  • Plenty of water – there are few places to stop for refreshments along the way
  • Sturdy shoes; the ground is stony
  • Sun protection and a hat
  • Swimwear, snorkel and water shoes
  • For gravel tracks: a trekking or mountain bike rather than a road bike
  • A small puncture repair kit

Bike hire

Various companies in the region offer bike tours and rentals, including Jistra Adventures (kayak and bike tours). Prices and availability change with the season – as of 2026, please check locally.
